Twisted Symmetric Group Actions

Let K be any field, K(x1, . . . , xn) be the rational function field of n variables over K, and Sn and An be the symmetric group and the alternating group of degree n respectively. For any a ∈ K \ {0}, define an action of Sn on K(x1, . . . , xn) by σ · xi = xσ(i) for σ ∈ An and σ · xi = a/xσ(i) for σ ∈ Sn \ An. Theorem. For any field K and n = 3, 4, 5, the fixed field K(x1, . . . , xn) Sn is ra...

Four-Dimensional Twisted Group Lattices

Four-dimensional twisted group lattices are used as models for spacetime structure. Compared to other attempts at space-time deformation, they have two main advantages: They have a physical interpretation and there is no difficulty in putting field theories on these structures. We present and discuss ordinary and gauge theories on twisted group lattices. We solve the free field theory case by f...

Twisted automorphisms of group algebras

We continue the study of twisted automorphisms of Hopf algebras started in [4]. In this paper we concentrate on the group algebra case. We describe the group of twisted automorphisms of the group algebra of a group of order coprime to 6. The description turns out to be very similar to the one for the universal enveloping algebra given in [4].

Crowell’s Derived Group and Twisted Polynomials

The derived group of a permutation representation, introduced by R.H. Crowell, unites many notions of knot theory. We survey Crowell’s construction, and offer new applications. The twisted Alexander group of a knot is defined. Using it, we obtain twisted Alexander modules and polynomials. Also, we extend a well-known theorem of Neuwirth and Stallings giving necessary and sufficient conditions f...

Twisted Actions and Obstructions in Group Cohomology

This article is intended to answer the question “Why do you guys always want to twist everything?” We review the various ways in which twists, twisted actions and twisted crossed products arise, and then discuss some cohomological obstructions to the existence and triviality of twisted actions. Our review begins with the classical problems of classifying group extensions and irreducible unitary...
